Salida is one of the best kept secrets in the state of Colorado. Salida boasts an array of activities that can be enjoyed by families, groups or couples on their Colorado vacation. Salida is surrounded by 14,000 ft mountains that make the Continental Divide; all the water on the west runs west to the Colorado River and on to the Pacific Ocean while all the water on the east runs east to the Arkansas River and on to the Atlantic Ocean. The Arkansas River is by far the most popular stretch of white water in the United States. Every summer outdoor enthusiasts come from all over the world to test their skills rafting and kayaking the many whitewater rapids on this Colorado river.
Salida was originally named South Arkansas. The town grew quickly as a rail hub and smelting and supply center. From Salida, the Denver & Rio Grande extended tracks up the valley through Buena Vista and on to Leadville. With the demise of the mining industry and railroads over time, most residents began to make their living ranching, farming and in tourism-related businesses. Today, Salida has even become a very popular artist community. There are many galleries and working studios to explore during your vacation.
The Arkansas River remains the center point of recreation in Salida. During the FibArk (First in Boating on the Arkansas), the featured race is a 26-mile kayak and raft race from Salida down to Cotopaxi, touted as the oldest and longest whitewater race in North America. For those who prefer to fish the river instead of racing on it, this stretch is known for it's brown and rainbow trout. Generally, you'll find good fishing on the Arkansas all the way from Granite down through Texas Creek. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area brochure includes a great map of the public access points.
